JazzTimes is honored to premiere the fourth episode of Sanborn Sessions, the digital music show from multiple Grammy Award-winning saxophonist David Sanborn, sponsored by pro audio retailer Sweetwater. In this episode, Sanborn welcomes producer and multi-instrumentalist Terrace Martin.

During the interview segments, Sanborn and Martin—also a current member of Herbie Hancock’s band—chat about the latter’s godfather Stemsy Hunter, who played saxophone with the Electric Flag, Buddy Miles, and Gil Scott-Heron, as well as Martin’s collaborations with rappers Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and Nipsey Hussle. In the performance segments, both the host and guest play alto saxophone; in addition, Martin sings, tackles Fender Rhodes electric piano and vocoder, and (for a few seconds) breaks into an impressive human-beatbox part. Besides Sanborn and Martin, the band includes keyboardist Taylor Eigsti, bassist Luques Curtis, and drummer Billy Kilson.

Filmed in Sanborn’s New York home studio, Sanborn Sessions explores the essence of music through candid conversations and free-flowing performances. The show’s first three episodes featured Kandace Springs, Michael McDonald with Brian Owens, and Jonatha Brooke with Charlie Hunter. Two more episodes are on the way, featuring Cyrille Aimée and Bob James. Episodes can be viewed at sanbornsessions.com, as well as on the Sanborn Sessions YouTube channel.
