JazzTimes is honored to present the premiere of the video for drummer/composer Andrew Munsey’s “High Tide,” the title track of his first album as a leader, to be released by Birdwatcher Records on August 30.

The video, shot and edited by Dakoit Pictures, showcases the band—Munsey, trumpeter Steph Richards, tenor saxophonist Ochion Jewell, pianist Amino Belyamani, and bassist Sam Minaie—recording “High Tide” at the Bunker Studio in Brooklyn, N.Y. Richards, Minaie, and Munsey can also be heard playing together on Richards’ acclaimed album Take the Neon Lights, released earlier this year.

On “High Tide,” the quintet shows its penchant for angular grooves and interlocking rhythms, quickly establishing a catchy geometry of lines and counterlines, then stretching and twisting those shapes over the remainder of the track. It’s a concise introduction to the compositional work of Munsey, who says: “This track captures a special energy from the band—something that we’ve been developing over the 11 years we’ve been playing together. I feel lucky to have a band that really brings out the best in this music, which was written for them in mind from the beginning.”
