JazzTimes is honored to present the premiere of “Who Shot John” by Grammy-nominated guitarist Dan Wilson. The track appears on Wilson’s third album as a leader, Vessels of Wood and Earth, currently scheduled for an April 23 release on Brother Mister/Mack Avenue Records.
Besides Wilson on guitar, the impressive band captured on this piece includes pianist Christian Sands, bassist Marco Panascia, and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts. Vocalist Joy Brown appears elsewhere on the new album.
Wilson comments on the track: “‘Who Shot John’ came from several influences. Chief among them are ‘The Balance’ by Dave Holland and ‘Night in Tunisia’ by Dizzy Gillespie. I always loved the way Dave Holland made changing time signatures danceable, and the brilliant harmonic direction of Dizzy’s compositions. The bass line was the first thing that popped into my head. Everything else was built around that. If you listen to the melody with the bass line in mind, you can hear the theme being stated throughout the tune.”
Through most of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wilson has been presenting a weekly livestream performance with his DTC Organ Trio, featuring organist Cliff Barnes and drummer David Throckmorton, in association with JazzTimes. You can check out some of their past shows on our Facebook Videos page.
