JazzTimes is honored to present the premiere of “Please Don’t Leave” by the Dan Weiss Trio Plus 1. The track appears on the upcoming album Utica Box, to be released November 8 on Sunnyside Records.

Composed by Weiss, “Please Don’t Leave” features the leader on drums, along with pianist Jacob Sacks and bassist Thomas Morgan. (The “plus 1” of the group is bassist Eivind Opsvik, who appears elsewhere on Utica Box, both on his own and in tandem with Morgan.) The trickily skipping Afro-Cuban-style groove that runs in and out of the piece makes use of a two-against-three feel; on top of it, Sacks and Morgan create a slow, brooding soundscape.

Weiss comments: “This song represents a facet of my compositional style quite clearly: that of juxtaposition. Behind the intricate drum patterns and polyrhythmic interplay of instruments, there lies a post-romantic style melody that falls somewhere between the bittersweet and the nostalgic.”

In support of Utica Box, the Dan Weiss Trio Plus 1 will be playing some North American tour dates in November. They are as follows:

11/13: New York, NY – Jazz Standard
11/15: Akron, OH – BluJazz
11/16: Cleveland, OH – The Bop Stop
11/17: Chicago, IL – Hungry Brain
11/18 and 11/19: Ann Arbor, MI – University of Michigan
11/20 and 11/21: Toronto, ON – The Rex
11/22 and 11/23: Montreal, QB – Diese Onze Jazz Club
