Judy Wexler’s BACK TO THE GARDEN
Iconic 1960s Songs of Love, Hope & Change, Reimagined
On her 6th album, BACK TO THE GARDEN, vocalist Judy Wexler recasts classic songs of the 1960s as jazz/pop anthems that are as relevant today as they were over 50 years ago.
BACK TO THE GARDEN is a departure from Wexler’s previous albums, which featured a mix of standards, contemporary jazz, and reworked modern pop classics. On her new CD, Wexler points her gaze to interpreting iconic pop/rock/folk songs from the 1960s with reimagined arrangements.
According to Wexler, “Music is truly a reflection of the times, and the music of the 1960s reflected the turbulence engendered by war, political protests, and the rise of important social movements like feminism and racial justice. Fifty years later, we’re still struggling with those same issues and more. Although the arrangements of these iconic songs are new, I find their message of love, hope and change as timely as ever.”
“Big Yellow Taxi” features Jeff Colella (piano), Larry Koonse (guitar), Danny Janklow (alto sax), Gabe Davis (bass), Steve Hass (drums), and Erin Bentlage (background vocals), with a funk-quirky arrangement by Colella.
“’Back to the Garden’ breathes fresh life into these songs and gives them a jazz feel with the elegance and sensitivity they deserve… Much should be said about Judy’s sparkling vocals and the shrewd arrangements. Passionate and reverential, she sings as if she’s of the music and the era, and she takes chances in the right places with a voice that is sufficiently agile and powerful to meet the songs’ challenges on their own terms.” – Marc Myers, JazzWax
