Vinnie Colaiuta

A powerhouse drummer, Vinnie Colaiuta has shown during his long career that he can play with anyone and uplift their music. Born in 1956 in Brownsville, Pa., he began seriously playing drums when he was 14. After a year attending the Berklee College of Music, Colaiuta moved to Los Angeles. He played with a variety of low-level bands until 1978, when he joined Frank Zappa’s band. Colaiuta’s ability to read perfectly any music put in front of him, his versatility and his technique made him a perfect fit with Zappa, with whom he performed for several years. After he went out on his own, Colaiuta became an extremely busy studio and session drummer, amassing a countless number of credits from quite a variety of artists, including Joni Mitchell, Barbra Streisand, Chaka Khan, Jeff Beck, Chick Corea, Quincy Jones, Buell Neidlinger, Lee Ritenour, Tiger Okoshi, Judy Collins, Billy Joel, Olivia Newton-John, Patti Austin, George Benson, the Beach Boys, David Sanborn, Allan Holdsworth, Ray Charles, John McLaughlin, Celine Dion, Sergio Mendes, Steely Dan, Mike Stern, Marcus Miller, Bob James, Michael Buble, James Taylor, Joe Cocker, the Backstreet Boys, Destiny’s Child, Dean Martin and even Megadeth. Colaiuta toured with Sting during 1990-97. He has also appeared on a remarkable number of film soundtracks and jingles, giving one the impression that he plays drums 24 hours a day. Colaiuta has won Modern Drummer’s reader polls as Drummer of the Year 18 times. In recent times, Colaiuta has toured with Faith Hill, Jeff Beck and Herbie Hancock.
