The son of singer Bobby McFerrin, Taylor McFerrin is in some ways following in his father’s large footsteps. He often puts on one-man shows, but he does this in the hip-hop field. Skilled as both a producer and a performer, McFerrin builds songs by utilizing a Fender Rhodes, synthesizers, samples, his vocals and beatboxing to create rhythmic and fresh music.
McFerrin has been gradually gaining popularity since 2004. He participated in the hip-hop groups the Hart Foundation and L Maestro. McFerrin toured with the Yohimbe Brothers in 2005, performing in Europe and South America. Most of his solo performances have been in New York City, including the Knitting Factory, and he has occasionally guested during his father’s shows. McFerrin’s first EP, Broken Vibes, has been gaining him attention, mixing together hip-hop with R&B and Brazilian music. His band, the Cell Theory, is a hip-hop group that has elements of beatbox, rap, soul and jazz.
