SERGIO REYES (Violinist) was born in Guatemala City in 1974. His mother, an art history professor and his father, a history teacher and classical music lover, gave him a rich musical and artistic background. At 9, he started studying violin at the National Conservatory and took private lessons with Professor Manuel Alvarado, who became his mentor. He was member of the Guatemala Youth Orchestra from the age of 10 until the age of 16 and represented his country in many international music festivals. At the age of 17, Sergio received a scholarship at Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, where he finished his high school studies specializing in violin and composition. In 1993, Sergio moved to New York, where he attended Manhattan School of Music and the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music. His career has been very rich and diverse, taking part in classical, latin american and jazz music projects. He worked as a performer and music consultant for Horizon Concerts, a non-profit foundation that sponsors free classical music concerts throughout the metropolitan area, a group directed by renowned pianist, the late Clive Lythgoe. He has performed in “Forever Tango” on Broadway and “Tango: Historias Breves” at NYU, as well as with the Eternal Tango Orchestra, Fernando Otero’s X-Tango, the late Octavio Brunetti’s Tango Quintet, Los Chantas, Lucía Pulido’s Música de Despecho and other groups. He has shared the stage with world famous mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade and renowned bandoneonists Maestro Raul Jaurena, Héctor del Curto and Tito Castro, among others. At Thalia he has performed in the acclaimed World Premiere musical Borges & Piazzolla TANGO in 2010, and with Mestizo Dance Company in Rhythms of Latin America in 2009 and in Colombia Passion & Soul in 2010.
