Since 2004, Mike Holstein has been a member of the band Cotangent, a New York based group led by pianist/composer Bill Gerhardt. He has played on two recordings with this band, Stained Glass and Thrive. He also appears on Tony Moreno’s Trio Music (Art of Life Records). He has performed with Joe Locke, Ingrid Jensen, Randy Brecker, Frank Kimbrough, Kendra Shank, Ron Horton, Marc Mommaas, and Tim Horner, among others. A truly gifted musician, Mike is finding himself more in demand than ever as he performs in jazz clubs in New York, throughout the Carolinas and continues to be a force with the Jazz Composers Forum.
Ron Brendle, a freelance bassist in the Charlotte area since 1981, was recently recognized by Charlotte Magazine as “Best Bassist.” His innovative compositions and improvisational style have also earned five awards as “Jazz Artist of the Year” from Creative Loafing. Ron was the recipient of two North Carolina Arts Council Jazz Composer Fellowship Grants, which helped to produce his CDs Hypermobility and Photograph.
He has performed and recorded with several jazz artists, including Nneena Freelon, Clark Terry, Andrew Hill, Charlie Byrd, Charlie Rouse, Mose Allison, and Frank Kimbrough.
Ron graduated from Appalachian State University with a bachelor’s degree in music and now teaches jazz bass there. He studied bass with Charlie Haden at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna, Florida.
Together, Ron and Mike have been performing as a double-double-bass duo to enthusiastic audiences since 2006.Originally Published
