Reuben Rogers is easy to take for granted because he is such a consistently excellent bassist, always uplifting soloists and ensembles. Born in 1974 and raised on the Virgin Islands, he heard jazz, calypso, reggae and gospel early on. Rogers started on the clarinet and also briefly played piano, drums and guitar before settling on the string bass when he was 14. He developed quickly, studying at Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan and at the Berklee College of Music, recording often since 1994. After graduating from Berklee in 1997, he became quite busy in the jazz world. Rogers has worked with Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, Marcus Roberts, Nicholas Payton, Mulgrew Miller, Jackie McLean, Dianne Reeves, the Charles Lloyd Quartet, and many others in the who’s who of jazz. He has appeared on over 60 CDs, including sets led by Redman, Payton, Reeves, Lloyd, Teodross Avery, Bob Belden, Marcus Printup, Carl Allen, Phil Woods, Irvin Mayfield, Darren Barrett, Donald Harrison, Aaron Goldberg, Adonis Rose, Wycliffe Gordon, Ron Blake, Matthias Lupri, Ralph Bowen, Mark Whitfield, John Ellis, Denzal Sinclaire, Jimmy Greene, Victor Goines, Kate McGarry and Taylor Eigsti. A most valuable player, Reuben Rogers has thus far led one CD of his own, The Things I Am.
