Jonathan Saraga

Trumpeter and composer Jonathan Saraga’s musicianship embodies what world-renowned jazz saxophonist Jimmy Greene calls “the best approach to modern jazz music: a thorough grounding in the rich tradition of the music coupled with a restless, searching spirit that seeks to express the music of now.” Greene also adds that Saraga’s debut album which features his own original compositions delivers “engaging, tuneful, urgent modern jazz played at a very high level by young, masterful musicians.” Jonathan has already been recognized as one of the best young jazz trumpet players in the United States, and the world, by securing first place in the International Trumpet Guild Jazz Improvisation Competition and by competing as one of 5 world-wide finalists in the Carmine Caruso Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition. Among other noteworthy accomplishments, Jonathan not only holds Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees, but has performed at New York’s Blue Note Jazz Festival, on WBGO 88.3FM, in a Paramount Pictures film, toured the United States with off-broadway productions and performed and recorded nationwide and internationally . He has also performed along side many of the world’s most renowned jazz musicians, such as Sean Jones, Jon Faddis, Eric Alexander, Jimmy Greene, Jon Gordon, Ray Vega, Jeremy Pelt, Jim Rotondi, and Ambrose Akinmusire to name only a few. All of these musicians can attest to Jonathan’s skills as a seasoned player, as can Arturo O’Farrill who hired Jonathan to perform at Birdland with his Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. Jonathan also has performed at the Blue Note, Smoke, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, The Jazz Standard, and Smalls, where Saraga’s debut album as a leader had it’s release. World-renowned trumpeter Jim Rotondi deems Jonathan’s playing on the album as “unique” and “inventive”, and says that it breaths “soul, intelligence, great technique and acute musical awareness.” The album, which features all original compositions by Saraga showcases “highly creative playing and writing…all done with a strong and fresh ensemble concept,” as declared by award winning saxophonist Jon Gordon, and according to Grammy award winning jazz bassist Todd Coolman, Jonathan Saraga’s “emerging original voice…is one that is indeed worthy of our attention.”
