The University of the Arts is one of the United States’ oldest universities dedicated to the arts. Located in Philadelphia, one of its three colleges is the College of Performing Arts. The Philadelphia Musical Academy was created in 1870 and in 1877 the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music was founded. In 1962 they merged together. In 1976, after acquiring the Philadelphia Dance Academy, the new entity was renamed the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts. In 1985 when it merged with the Philadelphia College of Art, the University of the Arts was formed, offering majors in music, dance and theater. Each year, the University of the Arts hosts a three-day jazz festival. 2008 was its 19th edition. In addition, it is not rare for jazz ensembles from the University of the Arts to perform at jazz festivals for its talented young students give listeners an idea of how promising jazz’s future looks.
