J. R. Spencer

J. R. Spencer is an acclaimed jazz pianist/vocalist, musicologist/author, music coach and artist developer currently residing in Long Beach, CA.

J. R. Spencer is the founder of Spencer Music and Artist Development and has coached musicians and actors for over thirty years. He currently teaches private lessons to students of all ages and levels in the following areas: piano, digital keyboard, harpsichord, voice, acting, violin, viola, mandolin, music theory/ear training, music composition/songwriting, musicology and research, music industry (including software and dee-jaying), music therapy, kindermusik and creativity/life coaching. Lessons are available in 30, 45, 60, 75, 90 and 120 minute durations biweekly, weekly or bimonthly. Ask about family rates, promotions and current scholarship auditions.

Artist Development is available for exceptionally talented pianists, vocalists, composers/arrangers and actors by portfolio submission and successful audition. Those accepted will work with Mr. Spencer in artist development and receive agent management services.

J. R. Spencer received a double emphasis Master and Bachelor of Music from California State University Fullerton, (95, 92); a performance diploma in early keyboard music from Royal Academy of Music in Victoria, Canada B. C. (89) and an Associate of Arts from Orange Coast College (88).

J. R Spencer has participated in noted jazz and classical piano masterclasses with: Oscar Peterson, George Shearing, Andreij Dutkeiwicz, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Joanna Hodges.

Jazz Piano/Vocal Performance credits include: Jazz Cafe (London), Cinegrill (Hollywood), Ritz Carlton Resort and Spa (Laguna Niguel), Disneyland Resort (Anaheim), S.S. Queen Mary Hotel (Long Beach), The Sky Room at The Breakers (Long Beach), Pier House (Key West), Jazz’d (Savannah), and The Halekulani Resort (Honolulu).

As a recording artist his latest album “Ragtime Elegance” a rare collection of rags by Scott Joplin and other classical ragtime composers will be available on Itunes, Cdbaby and Amazon in January of 2014. His last album “Blue Gardenia” contains his original cool jazz piano arrangements of standards inspired by film noir masterpieces and was released in limited edition in Southern California. J. R. as recorded “Just In Time” an album of his original stride piano arrangements of standards from the 1920s/30s. J. R. recorded the complete four hand works of George Gershwin with concert artist Roger Helkein, a graduate of the Conservatoire in Paris.

The book examines historical events of the opera’s creation, it’s premiere and Weill’s escape out of Nazi Germany. The book also events after it’s triple premiere, the work’s reconstruction and productions around the world.
