Dorothy Masuka

Singer, composer and international icon, Dorothy Masuku, made her debut in the revolutionary 1950’s. Born in Zimbabwe, she spent her formative years in South Africa and was swept up by the music scene at a young age. She performed in the travelling road show African Jazz and Variety and in the broadway style musical King Kong, one of the biggest hits in the 1950s. Masuku spent 31 years in exile, returning to South Africa when Nelson Mandela was released from prison. She composed many of Miriam Makeba’s songs that rose to fame, such as the world famous PataPata. Her latest album Mzilikaziupdates the 1950s South African jazz style with sophisticated contemporary arrangements.
