Djinii Brown

The son of altoist Marion Brown, Djinii Brown has made his mark in the world of hip-hop. Born in the Bronx, he traveled the world and picked up an appreciation of different styles of world music from his father, and from his mother who studied anthropology. He began his music career as the front man of the rock band Absolution in the late 1980s. After the band’s breakup, Brown became involved in hip-hop, working as an apprentice to Public Enemy’s producer Eric Sadler. He worked with many other artists, including Gravediggaz, Jean-Paul Bourelly, Vertical Hold, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Funkmaster Flex, Dilated Peoples, Fila Brazillia, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, A Tribe Called Quest, Cassandra Wilson, Barrington Levy, Supernatural, the Jungle Brothers, David Byrne and a variety of rappers and poets. Brown released his debut album, Sirround Sound, in the fall of 2002, a mix of hip-hop, dub, drum ‘n’ bass, souse, spoken word and Latin music. His follow-up release, Uncle Junior’s Friday Fish Fry, displays his interest in many of the world’s cultures and musical styles and is an eclectic and intriguing look at modern dance music.
