Zoot Sims/Al Cohn/Tony Scott: East Coast Sounds

The principals listed above are joined in an unusual septet by Joe Wilder (trumpet), Urbie Green (trombone), Trigger Albert (bass), and Ed Shaughnessy (drums), as Scott, Dick Hyman, and Marty Paich share arranging duties. Albert conceived this project and his Blantonesque sound drives things. Short versions of unusual standards predominate on this happy session which charts a middle passage between small-group swing and the experimental work of Gil Melle and George Russell. All the soloists are in good form on their brief excursions, and the ensemble playing is great.
