Only in its second year, the Silver Spring Jazz Festival in Silver Spring, Md. already has Wynton Marsalis headlining – do we even dare to dream what next year’s festival might bring?
Sept. 10 will bring Marsalis, Fred Yonnet, the Ron Holloway Group, Carol Sloane and Marcus Johnson to the D.C. suburb for a day of jazz. The festival will commence at 2 p.m. with a showcase of local youth talent in the Jazz Ensemble Caravan parade through the city and a competition between the bands. The competition will be judged by Marsalis; Susan Jenkins, president of Jazz Alliance International; Ira Sabin, JazzTimes‘ own founder and Chairman Emeritus; radio host Rusty Hassan; and radio personality Jacqui Allen.
The festival will also serve as a memorial of sorts for jazz legend and Silver Spring native Keter Betts, who died earlier this month (see Bassist Keter Betts Dies at Age 77).
More information on the festival is available at www.silversprung.com.
