Whoopi Goldberg Hosts [email protected] Event in Harlem

From Hollywood to Harlem, America’s favorite hostess, hands down, is Whoopi Goldberg (pictured left). After a wild night of outlandish costumes and momentous precedents at this year’s Oscars, the actress/comedienne is set to emcee Jazz at Lincoln Center’s inaugural spring-fling benefit gala, Comin’ Home to Harlem, at the historic Apollo Theatre. The benefit will raise funds to support [email protected]’s many educational activities, concert programs, and broadcasts.

Wynton Marsalis, of course, will be there performing some of his own favorites with his septet, as well as sitting in on performances by the beloved Stevie Wonder and the lovely Vanessa Williams. Tap dancer Savion Glover will be there, gettin’ down to new music by Marsalis and his band. Sir Roland Hanna is also scheduled for the event. Other celebrities expected to attend include Harry Crosby, Alfonse D’Amato, Maurice DuBois, Ahmet Ertegun, Peter Jennings, Glenn Close, Al Roker, and mister Oscar himself, Denzel Washington.

Following the show, concert goers will be directed to a tented space behind the theatre where an elegant dinner will be held. But diners will have to sneak their bites in between bids as Christie’s auctioneer George McNeely and a surprise guest celebrity will hold an auction during the meal to boost the benefit take. Items on the block include a week in Milan, an invite to the New York Yankees owner’s box for a day, a trip to an MTV awards show and after party, seats in an NBA Skybox for an evening game, a signed page of music from Wynton Marsalis’ Pulitzer Prize-winning score, “Blood on the Fields,” and other treasures to be announced.

The event is scheduled for Mon., May 20 at 7:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 9:30 p.m. Ticket prices range from $250 to $2,500. Tables of ten range from $5,000 to $25,000. For reservations, call Karen Hershey at (212) 343-1920. Lead corporate sponsors for the event are Cole Haan, JP Morgan Chase, and Movado.
