White Foundation Announces Sax Competition

Aspiring saxophonists need look no further than the BBC Radio 3 London Jazz Festival to jumpstart their careers. The White Foundation World Saxophone Competition will take place at that festival from November 17 through the 19. With a prize package that reads like a music-biz extreme makeover, serious saxophonists would be wise to grab the competition application from www.whitefoundation.com. The grand prize includes $3500, a new instrument, an audition with a major jazz label, performances in New York and London, print coverage in a major jazz media source, and even legal tips to make sure all those records execs stay in check. Prize sponsors include Yamaha, Blue Note, and Jazzwise, among others. Applications must be received by July 31, 2004.

In its third season, the White Foundation contest has pitted players from 17 different countries against each other in a competition judged by sax-heavyweights like David Sanborn, George Robert and Lee Konitz. Last year’s winner, Soweto Kinch, has since been nominated for 3 BBC Radio Jazz Awards.
