Wesla Whitfield: With a Song in My Heart

The sensuously expressive voice of Wesla Whitfield seems suited for every jazz vocal in the Great American Songbook, from Gershwin and Porter to Berlin and Cahn, her choices on previous albums. This release selects 18 gems from the prolific team of Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers.

Whitfield’s delivery of “It’s Easy to Remember” is so exquisite that it should be bronzed. Her impressive versatility lets her range from the romantic “My Romance” and the mournful “Little Girl Blue” to confident upbeat renditions of “This Can’t Be Love” and “The Lady Is a Tramp.” Mike Greensill’s piano work and arrangements are unendingly lyrical and softly swinging, being well matched by Michael Moore’s marvelous bass. One of the loveliest tracks is the honeyed vocal-and-burnished bass duet of “Blue Moon,” which Moore arranged.
