Wayne Shorter Quartet to Release Live Album

The Wayne Shorter Quartet is set to release a new album, Beyond the Sound Barrier, on Verve Records. The album, which hits stores on June 14, is a live collection recorded during the group’s years of touring.

Beyond the Sound Barrier features three new Shorter compositions: “As Far as the Eye Can See,” “Adventures Aboard the Golden Mean” and “Beyond the Sound Barrier,” as well as another new song, “Tinker Bell,” which is credited to the entire quartet.

Other performances on Beyond the Sound Barrier include the theme of Felix Mendelssohn’s “On Wings of Song” and “Over Shadow Hill Way,” a track that originally appeared on Shorter’s 1988 electric/acoustic album Joy Ryder.

All of the songs on Beyond the Sound Barrier were recorded between November 2002 and April 2004 during live performances in Asia, Europe and North America. The Quartet also has another live record on Verve called Footprints Live!.

The Quartet, featuring Danilo Perez on piano, John Patitucci on bass and Brian Blade on drums, was formed during the recording of Shorter’s 2003 album Alegria.
