Wayne Shorter in the Studio

Saxophonist Wayne Shorter is at Avatar Studios recording the follow-up to his 1994 solo album High Life and 1 + 1, his 1997 collaboration with former Miles Davis Quintet member Herbie Hancock. The CD is scheduled for a late summer or early fall 2002 release. Shown here at Avatar, from left to right, is producer Robert Sadin, pianist Brad Mehldau and Shorter.

Earlier this year it was rumored that Shorter would be recording his long-awaited orchestral project, a portion of which he debuted in a concert with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra on Jan. 2, 2001. He never did record the album, and the project he’s working on at Avatar is a smaller group project. Rumors persist, however, that Shorter will record his orchestral project in 2002, and he will release two CDs in the new year. We’ll believe it when we hear it–and we can’t wait to hear it.
