Warner Bros. Asks for Fan Remixes

As Warner Bros. has done with tracks by Joshua Redman, Kenny Garrett and BWB in the past, the label is offering tunes by George Benson, Joe Sample, Al Jarreau and others as part of its ongoing remix contest with ACIDPlanet.com.

The contest allows folks to download loops made from tracks in the songs offered (that’s individual instrument tracks, such as the isolated guitar, keyboard or saxophone tracks) and reconstruct the songs in an audio-editing software program called ACID. Remixers are to remake the songs as they see fit, with new arrangements, effects, etc. The songs usually come back sounding wholly different than the original versions. That is the point.

Warner Bros. and ACIDPlanet call it the Old Kool Jazz Remix Contest and the newly released tracks, listed below, will remain available for download until July 8, 2003, when the contest ends. The real prize is having your remix chosen for all to hear, but the kind folks at WB and ACIDPlanet will give you a “retro-style” turntable if you win. Go to www.acidplanet.com to download loops; check out www.wbjazz.com to hear past remixes.

Tunes available for remixing:

“Popsicle Toes” by Michael Franks

“We’re In This Love Together” by Al Jarreau

“Breezin'” by George Benson

“Spellbound” by Joe Sample

“Maputo” by Bob James and David Sanborn
