Walt Weiskopf: Sight to Sound

Walt Weiskopf’s Sight to Sound (Criss Cross) consists essentially of his 10-part suite inspired by visual art itself and by seven famous European artists, for whom most of the movements are named. He scored the piece for his tenor plus alto, trombone and rhythm section, which includes his brother Joel on piano. The composer’s fresh, imaginative writing at times integrates improvised solos by himself, his brother, altoist Andy Fusco, trombonist John Mosca, and his compositions collectively include both chordal and modal harmonies, both straightahead and flexible time signatures and an assortment of formal schemes. The leader is the principal soloist, and he is in fine form, his Coltrane-inspired tone and phrasing especially compelling in his scorching uptempo chorus on “Pablo” (Picasso) and his unhurried Spanish-tinged solo on “Salvador” (Dali). The others are top-notch as well. And bassist Doug Weiss and drummer Billy Drummond maintain a propulsive sense of swing even when dealing with quick meter changes.
