The music of John McLaughlin (pictured) and the Mahavishnu Orchestra will be brought back to life during a three-day celebration at the Cutting Room in New York City. Billed as “Vishnu-Fest 2005,” the Mahavishnu Project will celebrate and reinterpret guitarist John McLaughlin’s work with the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
The festival begins on July 13 with “The Essential Mahavishnu,” a concert comprised entirely of e-mail requests from fans. The set will be drawn from Birds of Fire, The Inner Moungtin Flame, Between Nothingness and Eternity and Visions of the Emerald Beyond. Song requests can be emailed to [email protected]
The performance on July 14 will be “Maha-Unplugged,” an evening of unique acoustic interpretations of Mahavishnu classics, including “Lotus” and “Thousand Island Park.” There will also be Middle Eastern interpretations by Ara Dinkjian of Night Ark, among others.
The festival will conclude on July 15 with “The Complete Inner Mounting Flame.” The Mahavishnu project will reinterpret the entire first Mahavishnu Orchestra release from beginning to end, with special guests to be announced.
Tickets are $20 each night and are available online at SmartTix.
