Vincent Herring: The Days of Wine and Roses

Since 1990, saxophonist Vincent Herring has received rave reviews for his recordings as leader-praise for his good tone, sharp bluesy sound, and his burgeoning expertise as a bop stylist.

On Days of Wine and Roses, Herring’s fifth MusicMasters album, he slows down to ponder nine dreamy standards, including “Body and Soul,” “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes,” “Come Rain or Come Shine,” and the title tune (recorded the week composer Henry Mancini died).

Herring infuses his alto and soprano fashionings with passion and imagination, and equitably gives space to pianist Cyrus Chestnut and drummer Billy Drummond, imaginative players making waves on the scene. Bassist Jesse Yusef Murphy is new to New York and shows promise. Percussionist Daniel Sadownick tastefully augments two tunes.

At 32, Herring’s plentiful chops, resourcefulness, and sparkling spirit, along with hearty respect for the tradition, put him on the path of the flame keepers. He continues to grow. This session confirms his talents and dedication.
