Verve Remixed, Again

Last year’s Verve Remixed-the album that answered the question “Would anybody buy a CD of moldy jazz tracks redefined by today’s hottest DJs?” with a loud and proud “Hell yes!”-spun in the offices of the mighty JT for weeks. We only took it out to play Verve Unmixed, the CD that compiled all the original tracks the DJs had spun upside down and inside out on the remix album. But eventually we had to stop listening to both because, well, we receive a heck of a lot of CDs every day and need to hear them too if we’re going to put out a magazine about jazz and all.

Now, at least for a little while, we can once again listen to remixed Verve tracks and not necessarily feel like we’re neglecting that stack of CIMP releases in the corner-because Verve Remixed 2 arrived in the mail a couple days ago, along with Verve Unmixed 2. You’ll be able to buy them both on September 9. And Remixed 2 will be available on vinyl LP as well as CD, in case you like it like that.

Classic Verve tracks gettin’ cut up this time around include Dizzy Gillespie’s “Manteca,” Ella Fitzgerlad’s “Slap That Bass” and “Angel Eyes,” Sarah Vaughan’s “Whatever Lola Wants.” We heard remixed Ella and Sassy on the first Remixed album, but none of the DJs from the previous disc return on the sequel. Instead, Verve got a whole new crew that includes house music masters Felix da Housecat and Matthew Herbert, downtempo groove guy Mr. Scruff and Miguel Migs, who has worked with Britney Spears (Britney Spears!).

This is all great news, but one thing that’s bothering me is that Verve’s Web page devoted to the new album lists a remix of Archie Shepp’s “Blues for Brother George Jackson” by Mondo Grosso and Shepp himself as the disc’s closing track, but it’s missing from the advance copy we received. Are we going to have to wait for Verve Remixed 3 to hear it? I hope not, I loves the Sheppster. A track list is below, the songs appear in their original forms in the same order on Unmixed 2.

1 Manteca – The Funky Lowlives Remix (Dizzy Gillespie)

2 Sinnerman – The Felix Da Housecat Heavenly House Mix (Nina Simone)
