The Love Project (Narada) compilation album features romantic songs covered by top smooth-jazz stars, and while that’s not exactly an earth-shattering concept, the tracks are well-executed and pleasing. Standouts include guitarist Joyce Cooling’s poignant take on Leon Russell’s “A Song for You,” and Ramsey Lewis and Nancy Wilson’s elegant reading of Van Morrison’s “Moondance.” Lewis’ son Frayne-a driving force behind Urban Knights-makes his presence felt on the album; his eponymous ensemble performs a duet version of the Isley Brothers’ “For the Love of You,” and Urban Knights delivers a grooving instrumental take on the James Ingram-Patti Austin hit “Baby Come to Me.” Pianist David Benoit turns in a lovely reading of “What the World Needs Now,” and the album includes Euge Groove’s version of “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight.”
The Love Project reaches back to Peter White’s first album, Reveillez-Vous, for the guitarist’s sweet rendition of Buddy Holly’s “Everyday.” It’s a nice choice of cover song and a charming way to close the album.

Jonathan Butler: The Simple Life
Jonathan Butler’s optimistic music belies a dirt-poor childhood growing up in a South Africa segregated by apartheid. Live in South Africa, a new CD and DVD package, presents a sense of the resulting inner turmoil, mixed with dogged resolve, that paved the way to his status as an icon in his country and successful musician outside of it. Looking back, the 46-year-old Butler says today, the driving forces that led to his overcoming apartheid-the formal policy of racial separation and economic discrimination finally dismantled in 1993-were family, faith and abundant talent.
“When we were kids, our parents never talked about the ANC [African National Congress] or Nelson Mandela,” he says. Butler was raised as the youngest child in a large family. They lived in a house patched together by corrugated tin and cardboard, in the “coloreds only” township of Athlone near Cape Town. “They never talked about struggles so we never knew what was happening.”
