Various Artists: Missao de Pesquisas Folcloricas

From the treasure trove of world music archives comes the Discoteca Collection, Missao de Pesquisas Folcloricas (World 10403; 53:15), a set of Northern Brazilian music dating back to a 1938 field recording project. Part of the World label’s “Library of Congress-Endangered Music Project,” produced by Mickey Hart and Alan Jabbour, the album offers an early portrait of Brazil’s rich tradition of folk and ritual music, from before the time when Brazil was fully matriculated into the global music scene. As such, the historic recording has a quality of innocence, apart from its rough musical charms.
