Various Artists: Jammin’ in the Bronx

A fundraiser for the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center and a tribute to the great Cuban bandleader, Machito, this live concert features the Machito Orchestra, the Papo Vazquez Latin Jazz Group, and the All Star Orchestra, led by Chucho Valdes. Each group performs several numbers. There are two solo conga numbers, one by Giovanni Hidalgo, the other a richly seasoned, understated performance by veteran Patato Valdes. Joining trombonist Vazquez’s exceptional group on “Que Pescao!” is virtuoso cuatro player, Yomo Toro. He’s extraordinary, and his vigorous trading with pianist Arturo O’Farrill, Jr., offspring of Chico, gets roaring approval from the crowd. Tenorist Peter Brainin is impressive on the other Vazquez outing, “Como el Agua.” Pianist Chucho Valdes hurtles through his own “Mr. Bruce,” featuring Irakere guitarist Carlos Emilio Morales. The Machito Orchestra plays “Cuban Fantasy,” “Tanga,” and “Mambo America,” with special guest Jimmy Bosch’s inspired trombone solo on the latter. Other guests at this rare concert include trumpeter Chocolate Armenteros and flutist Dave Valentin.
