Various Artists: Brasil 2mil-The Soul of Bass-O-Nova

Brazilian music (samba, bossa nova, MFB) has always danced jazzy-hot. In the ’90s, it’s all about Afro-Brazilian ciphers (jazzy rapture). Dunno if the unknown-to-most-of-us new wave artists featured on Brasil 2mil-The Soul of Bass-O-Nova (Six Degrees Records, 657036, 60:37) really matter back home, but out here in the world, they feel like major innovators. Fourteen tracks ranging from the Nancy Sinatra/Roy Ayers deep house samba of ZUCO 103’s “Outro Lado” to Arakatuba’s batucada-hypnotic jazz-trance jamming “Josimar”, Brasil 2mil swings fresh.
