Uptown Row Django Jazz Fest hits Minneapolis tomorrow

The Uptown Row Django Jazz Fest is set for tomorrow in Minneapolis, MN. The festival features hard-swinging “hot club” music, best described as a mix of Gypsy music, French café music and American swing music, created by Django Reinhardt (pictured) with origins in the performance venues of 1930s Paris.

The style has a dedicated group of fans and practitioners across the world. This is the first time Minneapolis will experience a festival of this nature, featuring notable artists such as The Hot Club of Sweden with Connie Evingson, Clearwater Hot Club, Parisota Hot Club and the Twin Cities Hot Club.

Connie Evingson, a featured performer and top Twin-Cities singer, has released two “hot club” recordings, one of which-2004’s Gypsy in My Soul-reached number eight in the US on the JazzWeek radio charts. She is set to perform with The Hot Club of Sweden, featuring Gustav Lundgren, Andreas Oberg and Hampus Lundgren, three prominent young musicians from Stockholm.

The festival will take place at the Midtown Greenway, a short distance from Uptown Row. The festival will feature food from the Uptown Row eateries, including City Pages “Best of the Twin Cities: 2006” winners Pizza Nea (“Best Pizza”) and Tum Rup Thai (“Best Thai Restaurant”).
