Upcoming SteepleChasers

Two new discs from Denmark’s SteepleChase label, one by Michael Cochrane and one by Duke Jordan, will hit stores June 6.

The Cochrane CD, Pathways (pictured), is a brand new release recorded in November of last year and is touted as the sequel to the pianist’s 2002 release, Quartet Music; it has the same personnel (tenor saxophopnist Bob Malach, bassist Calvin Hill and drummer Jeff Hirshfeld). This time Cochrane complements his own tunes with compositions by Ornette Coleman, Michel Petrucciani, Antonio Carlos Jobim and a few others and, all told, it clocks in at 69 minutes, 37 seconds. Track list, in capital letters:

WHEN WILL THE BLUES LEAVE (Ornette Coleman) 7:09

SAMBA DO AVIÃO (Antonio Carlos Jobim) 5:27

THINKING OF WAYNE (Michel Petrucciani) 6:17

THE LINE FORMS AT THE END (Michael Cochrane) 6:30

The Duke Jordan disc’s title, Flight to Norway, plays off the title of the pianist’s Flight to Japan, from 1976, which had a hella good album cover and was also on SteepleChase. Like Japan, Flight to Norway is a live trio date recorded in the 1970s (specifically Nov. 10, 1978) with Wilbur Little on bass. But this set features Dannie Richmond on drums (Roy Haynes played drums on Japan). The concert, never before released and heretofore only available to sucka-Norwegian bootleggers, was recorded at the Art Museum in Høvikodden, Norway and is just three minutes shy of hitting the 80-minute capacity of a compact disc.
