California has the best of everything, most notably a bodybuilder/actor governor, and UCLA’s 2005-2006 Live Jazz season is no exception.
The season begins Oct. 22 with the Omar Sosa Quartet and special guest Will Power in a concert that will highlight the group’s trademark Latin-urban jazz sound. On Oct. 25, Grammy-award winning bassist Marcus Miller will make his UCLA Live debut in a double bill with R&B singer Lalah Hathaway.
While not officially part of the Jazz series, UCLA Live will host a tribute to Billie Holiday on Oct. 28. “Billie & Me” will feature performances by Dianne Reeves, Fontella Bass, Rokia Traore and Terri Lyne Carrington.
Continuing the Jazz series is a Nov. 20 performance by pianist Ahmad Jamal and concluding the 2005-2006 UCLA Live Jazz season is a performance on Feb. 18 by Alice Coltrane (pictured) in a bill with the Dwight Trible Quintet.
Series tickets are on sale now and purchasers will receive priority seating until July 15, as well as a substantial discount. Single tickets and Choose Your Own Subscriptions will go on sale July 18. UCLA students have the opportunity to purchase discounted tickets in advance and all students are eligible for student rush tickets, which may purchased the day of the show, one hour prior to show time. Tickets are available online at www.uclalive.org and, beginning July 18, through Ticketmaster.

Jonathan Butler: The Simple Life
Jonathan Butler’s optimistic music belies a dirt-poor childhood growing up in a South Africa segregated by apartheid. Live in South Africa, a new CD and DVD package, presents a sense of the resulting inner turmoil, mixed with dogged resolve, that paved the way to his status as an icon in his country and successful musician outside of it. Looking back, the 46-year-old Butler says today, the driving forces that led to his overcoming apartheid-the formal policy of racial separation and economic discrimination finally dismantled in 1993-were family, faith and abundant talent.
“When we were kids, our parents never talked about the ANC [African National Congress] or Nelson Mandela,” he says. Butler was raised as the youngest child in a large family. They lived in a house patched together by corrugated tin and cardboard, in the “coloreds only” township of Athlone near Cape Town. “They never talked about struggles so we never knew what was happening.”
