Two simultaneous CD releases next month will throw a spotlight on the work of pianist/composer (and psychiatrist/medical school professor) Denny Zeitlin and his trios. First, Mosaic Records is releasing the three-CD The Columbia Studio Trio Sessions. Then, Sunnyside will issue Denny Zeitlin Trio In Concert, Featuring Buster Williams and Matt Wilson, a new recording.
The Mosaic collection opens with Zeitlin’s first of over 30 albums, Cathexis (featuring bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Freddie Waits). It also includes his second and fourth albums Carnival and Zeitgeist, respectively.
The new album is a live recording with bassist Buster Williams and drummer Matt Wilson. Zeitlin’s debut for Sunnyside Records, the album is culled from three live sessions, two recorded at Los Angeles’ famed Jazz Bakery, the other from New Mexico’s Outpost Performance Space.
