Trumpeter Danny Hayes died on Dec. 10 in Calvary Hospital in Bronx, New York at the age of 58. He died of brain cancer, for which he had been hospitalized since Oct. 12.
Hayes was born and raised in West Warwick, R.I. and attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He later moved to New York City, where he spent most of his career, except for periods in Greece.
During the 1970s and early 1980s, Hayes played and recorded with the big bands of Buddy Rich, Gerry Mulligan and Doc Severinsen. He also played with Chuck Israels’ National Jazz Ensemble, as well as with bassist Reggie Johnson. His playing was limited in recent years, however, due to lung problems.
Funeral services will be in Rhode Island and limited to his immediate family.
