Tony DeSare: Want You

Does the world really need yet another hipster lad singer of the Michael Buble, Peter Cincotti and Matt Dusk ilk? It does if the crooner in question is Tony DeSare. Throughout his multishaded debut disc, Want You (Telarc), DeSare, who resembles a younger Jerry Seinfeld, sometimes suggests Harry Connick caught in a Jack Jones time warp; other times he sounds like Barry Manilow injected with a finger-snappin’ shot of Bobby Rydell. He can be Al Martino smooth, Bobby Darin slick (especially on Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields’ swingin’ “Baby Dream Your Dream” from Sweet Charity) and John Pizzarelli sharp (notably on “We’ve Got a World That Swings,” lifted from the 1964 Jerry Lewis comedy hit The Nutty Professor). In other words, DeSare is a smorgasbord of influences that haven’t quite gelled but hint at tremendous promise and terrific fun.
