Tom Harrell is getting the Charlie Rose treatment on Wednesday, August 20, on 60 Minutes II in honor of the trumpeter’s upcoming CD, Wise Children (Bluebird). What is the Charlie Rose treatment? Well, it includes asking fawning questions while looking wry and disheveled. (That’s how I interview people, too!) The segment is called “A Beautiful Note,” and the show is on between 8 and 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. (You’ll be washing out of your mind the image of Charlie kissin’ fanny for at least an hour after that.)
But if anyone deserves the touch of the Rose it’s Tom Harrell. He’s been able to control his schizophrenia and become one of the most respected players, composers and arrangers in jazz, and the September 9 release of Wise Children will confirm that. The disc follows his critically acclaimed 2002 CD Live at the Village Vanguard, and four stunning vocalists make appearances on Wise Children: Dianne Reeves (“Straight to My Heart”), Cassandra Wilson (“Leaves”), Jane Monheit (“Snow”) and Claudia Acuña (“Radiant Moon”). The other six tunes are instrumentals and feature Harrell’s show-stopping quintet: tenor saxophonist Jimmy Greene, pianist Xavier Davis, bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Quincy Davis. Harrell composed all 10 tunes.
