Tom Cohen: Six Trios, One Record

Tom Cohen

For his debut on the Philadelphia-based Dreambox Media label, veteran Philly drummer Tom Cohen assembled six different pairings of guitarists and bassists to stretch out on familiar jazz standards. Recorded over a span of two years, The Guitar Trio Project showcases Cohen’s highly interactive drumming style in the company of such outstanding six-stringers as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ben Monder, Rez Abbasi, Bruce Saunders, Jef Lee Johnson and Paul Bollenback, along with bassists Steve LaSpina, Mike Richmond, John Hebert, Conrad Korsch, Eric Revis and Chico Huff.

“It was an immense undertaking,” says the New York native who moved to Philadelphia in the mid-’70s and has been a stalwart on the jazz scene there ever since. “I conceived of the idea back in 1999 and then kept going forward with session after session, recruiting these remarkable players along the way. And the real challenge was in establishing chemistry with each different trio each time we hit in the studio. The idea was to not only interpret a piece of music and make it sound decent but hopefully let it really lift off as well.”
