Toledo Bridge Needs Name

Members of the jazz community in Toledo, Ohio are crossing their fingers in hopes that they will one day cross the Maumee River on the Art Tatum Bridge. A major bridge construction project on I-280 has the Maumee River Crossing Task Force asking the public to supply a fitting name for the unfinished landmark. This is a no-brainer for area jazz fans who want the bridge named after Toledo-born piano giant Art Tatum. Tatum began playing professionally in Toledo in the mid-1920s and hosted a local radio program from 1929-1930.

Name nominations are being accepted at until April 30, 2001. In September, the Task Force will review all the nominations and make a recommendation to the Ohio State Legislature, who will make the final decision. Let’s hope Ohio lawmakers are sympathetic to Toledo’s jazz fans.
