Vocalist Tierney Sutton has caught the jazz world’s attention in recent years with her Grammy nomination, recognition by JazzWeek magazine last year as “Vocalist of the Year” and her latest album, On the Other Side. Now, fans of Sutton can catch her and the rest of the Tierney Sutton Band for a limited run this fall at Birdland in New York City.
Released February of this year, On the Other Side features 13 tracks performed by Sutton and her band: pianist Christian Jacob, bassists Trey Henry and Kevin Axt and drummer Ray Brinker. Together, the five musicians reinvent such standards as “Get Happy,” “Happy Days Are Here Again” and “You Are My Sunshine.” They will perform songs from this album for their performance at Birdland from Oct. 31 to Nov. 3.
The Tierney Sutton Band will perform at 8:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. each night, and VIP tickets cost $40 and $45.

Jonathan Butler: The Simple Life
Jonathan Butler’s optimistic music belies a dirt-poor childhood growing up in a South Africa segregated by apartheid. Live in South Africa, a new CD and DVD package, presents a sense of the resulting inner turmoil, mixed with dogged resolve, that paved the way to his status as an icon in his country and successful musician outside of it. Looking back, the 46-year-old Butler says today, the driving forces that led to his overcoming apartheid-the formal policy of racial separation and economic discrimination finally dismantled in 1993-were family, faith and abundant talent.
“When we were kids, our parents never talked about the ANC [African National Congress] or Nelson Mandela,” he says. Butler was raised as the youngest child in a large family. They lived in a house patched together by corrugated tin and cardboard, in the “coloreds only” township of Athlone near Cape Town. “They never talked about struggles so we never knew what was happening.”
