The Jazz 88 Ocean Beach Jazz Festival will mark its third year with a daylong event on Sunday, Sept. 9 in San Diego. Headlined by Latin-jazz percussionist and conga player Poncho Sanchez, the lineup also includes Joey DeFrancesco, Duke Robillard (pictured) and the Dave Pike Quartet. The Festival is co-hosted by the Ocean Beach Main Street Association and listener-supported KSDS Jazz 88.3 FM, a broadcast service of San Diego City College. New Orleans Jazz and Heritage station WWOZ 90.7 will broadcast the festival live.
Legendary musician Poncho Sanchez has been nominated for several Grammy awards, and has a win in the Best Latin-Jazz Album category for his record Latin Soul. B3 organist Joey DeFrancesco is widely credited with reviving interest in the jazz organ and has recorded over 20 albums. Guitarist Duke Robillard has played swinging, jumping jazz and blues for over 40 years and has more than a dozen solo albums to his name. The Latin-themed vibraphonist Dave Pike will play at the Festival with his Quartet, featuring jazz guitarist Mundell Lowe, and local San Diego quintet the Jazz 88 All Stars will kick off the day’s events.
Organizers expect nearly a thousand visitors for the festival this year, which will take place on the waterfront at the end of Newport Avenue. General admission tickets start at $35, and are available through the festival’s official Web site.
