The Last Poets: Time has Come

The Last Poets’ reemergence was one of the more welcome events of the early ’90s. And the follow-ups have been even more welcome: Abiodun Oyewole’s 25 Years and the Poets’ Holy Terror followed Umar Bin Hassan’s 1993 Bebop or Be Dead. On their latest entry, Time Has Come (Mouth Almighty) the trio (Hassan, Oyewole and Don “Babatunde” Eaton) display their still-sharp, sociopolitically edged verbiage on “Kings Of Pain,” “Trapped” and “Down to Now,” the latter featuring a cameo by Poets inspiree Chuck D. Instrumental backing comes courtesy of some of the more familiar members of producer Bill Laswell’s ever-shifting musical family: Pharaoh Sanders, turntablist DXT and Senagalese percussionist Aiyb Deng.
