The John Pizzarelli Collection: One Night With You

The beneficiary of invaluable inspiration and encouragement from his father, Bucky, guitarist/singer John Pizzarelli has developed into a major talent himself, one whose preference for classic pre-1950s pop music and jazz is rarely encountered in men his age. Here, John amply demonstrates his flexibility as both an instrumentalist and a singer in 14 tunes that range from quality Tin Pan Alley pops to Ellingtonia. Originals include hisfather’s “Stray Horn” and his own “Take My Smile.”

Besides John and Bucky, the major soloists heard in extended spots are legendary jazz violinist Johnny Frigo, Clark Terry, and Dave McKenna, while the equally formidable rhythm players include Milt Hinton, Ron Carter, Mike Moore, Connie Kay, and Butch Miles. Almost equally divided between all-out instrumentals and highly engaging jazz vocals, this set will go a long way toward establishing the younger Pizzarelli on a level presently enjoyed by his widely respected father.
