Teodross Avery: New Day, New Groove

Long time we ‘na heard from saxophonist Teodross Avery. He got lost in the great young lions boom/bust of the mid-’90s. Three woodshed-years later, Avery has flipped from neo-traditionalist jazzbo to jazz-hip hop futurist. New Day, New Groove reveals that stylistically, Teo’s freed-up his inner MC; kicking tongue-twisting tenor/soprano solos over-under-behind the beat like Rakim. Composition/production-wise, it’s about ’70s CTI-hip hop beats-spoken word-neo soul. Fave track; “On And On.” Avery’s tenor works a dreamy, creamy Grover-bossa-bluesy mojo on Erykah Badu.
