Teddy Morgan: Louisiana Rain

A more sedate guitar stylist is Teddy Morgan, who conjures up some soulful Sun-era rock and blues on Louisiana Rain (Antone’s/Discovery 74705; 38:54). There’s a decided Fabulous Thunderbirds vibe on “Full Grown Man,” enhanced by the presence of T-Birds harpist Kim Wilson. Morgan digs into a N’awlins second line groove on “Big Town Women” and offers up some tough Stevie Ray Vaughan-styled rock on “Hey Hey Now.” His ripping rave-up “Baby Don’t Leave Me,” co-penned by zydeco artist Geno Delafose, would go over well on Saturday nights at the Rock ‘N’ Bowl in New Orleans while his “Walkin’ Out On You” recalls early Kent-era B.B. King. The balladic title track offers his most intimate side and he swings effortlessly on the groovy “Inside Out,” a raucous romp that is kicked into high gear by Jeff Turmes’ baritone sax solo. A strong debut from a new face on the scene.
