Tanglewood Festival Announced

Another day, another jazz festival to hype. ‘Tis the season. The Boston-area Tanglewood Jazz Festival takes place over Labor Day Weekend in late August, but we figure we better give you the heads up far in advance because the headliners-Wynton Marsalis, Marian McPartland (pictured), Gato Barbieri and Michel Camilo-can sell out a venue quick and tickets are already on sale.

Friday, August 29 will be a night of Latin flavored jazz with pianist Camilo and his trio, as well as saxophonist Barbieri with his band, starting at 8 p.m. in Seiji Ozawa Hall in Lenox, Mass. Marian McPartland will tape a live episode of her Piano Jazz radio program with an as-yet unnamed special guest the following afternoon at 3 p.m. at the same venue. On Sunday, August 31, the fest moves to Koussevitzky Music Shed (also in Lenox) where Wynton Marsalis will perform with his septet, comprised of drummer Herlin Riley, saxophonist Wess “Warmdaddy” Anderson, pianist Richard Johnson, clarinetist Victor Goines, trombonist Ron Westray and bassist Reginald Veal. We’re told other musicians will perform at Tanglewood this year, but we’ve been given no names.

Tickets can be bought separately for each performance, starting at $20 for lawn seats. Tickets are available through the Boston Symphony’s SymphonyCharge at 888-266-1200 or online at Tickets are also available through Ticketmaster.
