Tanglewood, Detroit & Vancouver Festivals Announce Lineups

Three major jazz festivals have announced the schedules for their 2009 events.

The 30th anniversary edition of the Detroit International Jazz Festival will take place September 4 through September 7, in downtown Detroit. Performers will include Hank Jones, Monk on Monk, Corea, Clark & White, Dave Brubeck, Brubeck Brothers Quartet, the Clayton Brothers, Wayne Shorter Quartet featuring Brian Blade, John Patitucci & Danilo Perez, Sheila Jordan, John Pizzarelli Quartet with special guest Bucky Pizzarelli, Christian McBride and Inside Straight, Chuchito Valdés Quartet, Larry Coryell Trio with special guest Julian Coryell, the Heath Brothers, Louis Hayes & the Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band, the Carl Allen & Rodney Whitaker Project, Sean Jones Quintet, Stefon Harris & Blackout, Alfredo Rodriguez, Eddie Daniels with the Wayne State University Big Band, Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express, and Irma Thomas. The TD Canada Trust Vancouver International Jazz Festival is scheduled for June 26 – July 5. Scheduled performers include Sonny Rollins, Pink Martini and Orchestra, the David Sanborn Group, the Derek Trucks Band, Al Di Meola World Sinfonia ’09, King Sunny Adé, Amon Tobin, DJ Quantic, Maraca’s Salsa & Latin Band, Taylor Bynum Trio, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Enrico Rava/Stefano Bollani, Chucho Valdés Quintet, Joyce, Hiromi’s Sonicbloom, The Sea and Cake, Kurt Elling, Nikki Yanofsky, and Mats Gustafsson. And the Boston Symphony Orchestra will present its annual Labor Day Weekend Tanglewood Jazz Festival September 4-September 6, at the Orchestra’s summer home in the Berkshire Hills in Lenox, Massachusetts. Jazz greats highlighting this year’s festival include Paquito d’Rivera, Regina Carter, Nnenna Freelon, Kenny Barron, Mulgrew Miller, Dave Holland, Steve Nelson, Chris Potter, Robin Eubanks, Antonio Hart, Gary Smulyan, Jon Faddis, David Hazeltine, Wallace Roney, Sean Jones, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Harolyn Blackwell, and Mike Garson. “Radio Deluxe” with John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey will feature guest artists Bucky Pizzarelli, Aaron Weinstein and Harry Allen.
