Summer Sun Ra Events in New York

Eighty-eight moons have passed since Sun Ra arrived on Earth in 1914. He has since left us, presumably for his home planet Saturn. His followers await his return with their original Saturn copies of The Magic City clenched tightly to their chests-probably for naught. He never promised he’d come back.

Luckily, fans of Ra and his Arkestra still have saxophonist Marshall Allen around. Allen, though not a replacement for Ra, continues to lead the Arkestra in rare performances. And the Arkestra will be playing a few gigs this summer in New York City. The summer also brings a Sun Ra radio event on WKCR-FM and the Internet, and the Vision Festival’s film series will screen some ultra-rare Ra home videos. Particulars follow.
