Such Sweet Thunder

Herb Snitzer’s classic jazz photography has lined the sleeves of jazz albums and walls of jazz clubs for several years. His newest book, Such Sweet Thunder, available online at for $25, boasts 243 pages and 129 photographs of jazz giants from their glory days, seen through Snitzer’s lens as he passed in and out of jazz clubs, festivals, release parties and musicians’ homes.

Snitzer describes the book as a “45 year commitment to the world of jazz and especially to the men and women who make the music.” Classic images of Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Nina Simone and John Coltrane are included in the book, along with pictures of many unknowns described by Snitzer as “those musicians who labor with little recognition but who are wonderful people and wonderful artists–Sheila Jordan to name my favorite.”

Snitzer’s photographs of Lester Young, Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, Sonny Rollins, Gerry Mulligan, Thelonious Monk, Woody Herman, Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington are also available online at the Truefire Web site.
